Anna Katharine Green's renewed success with “The Step on the Stair” is most gratifying to those who read “The Leavenworth Case” twenty-five years ago. We met her on her last trip to New York City and found her a delightful lady, with no old-fashioned ideas and a deal of wit. She says that when anyone tells her that he has “read her book at one sitting — couldn't let it alone”, she always feels a little disappointed. “When I like a book”, she says, “I like to take my time over it.” She lives in our favorite American city, Buffalo (excepting always our home town, supposed to be the most beautiful city in the world). She says that her husband is her “best friend and severest critic”. After all, when we find a mate — We are looking for one who fulfills a requirement just as obvious as that — just that, as a matter of fact. --The Bookman, Volume 57
