This is, briefly, the story of two men and one woman; the second woman who enters the story and whom Stephen Stratton marries is of negligible importance. It is the story of the early attachment of Stephen and Lady Mary Christian; of her marriage with Martin Justin; of the later meeting of Stephen and Mary, with the old love flaming into passion; of Justin's discovery of their love, and Lady Mary's suicide. This story is written down by Stephen Stratton, in middle life, for his son—but with the story he writes of other matters, of the labor problem, of social adjustments, of world unity, and of the relations of men and women.
